City of Nicholasville Announces Plans for New Municipal Center
NICHOLASVILLE, KY. — The City of Nicholasville has unveiled finalized plans for a new Municipal Center, along with construction timing. The three-story building will centralize City services, enhance operational efficiency, and better serve the growing community.
“This beautiful, new Municipal Center represents our commitment to providing efficient and accessible services to our residents,” said Nicholasville Mayor Alex Carter. “It’s a significant step forward in meeting the needs of our growing community and giving our dedicated personnel more functional space.”
City offices have been spread across multiple, retrofitted buildings for decades, resulting in overcrowding and outdated infrastructure. The new facility will significantly decrease maintenance costs while enhancing energy and other operational efficiencies. Technology upgrades will also be made. Additionally, consolidating departments into a single, modern facility will enhance the customer experience.
City officials broke ground for a new municipal center 18 years ago, but the project was put on hold before construction began due to the financial uncertainty of the Great Recession.
Through prudent financial planning and oversight, the City of Nicholasville now has the financial capacity to undertake the project on property it has owned for many years with the recent acquisition of an adjoining lot.
Project Overview:
- Location: The new facility will be constructed beside the existing City Hall, incorporating adjacent parcels, including the former Pizza Hut site and the current Utility Office.
- Size: Approximately 38,865 square feet across three floors.
- Design Features:
- Lower Level: Accessible from the south parking lot on Stratton Drive, this level will house a community room for public meetings, including City Commission and Planning and Zoning sessions.
- Second Floor: With at-grade access from the north parking lot, this floor will accommodate City Administration, Finance, and Utility offices. It will feature a utility payment counter and a convenient drive-up window.
- Third Floor: Dedicated to Planning and Zoning, Engineering, and Water/Sewer departments, strategically placed based on public foot traffic and interdepartmental collaboration.
- Exterior and Interior Design: The building will showcase a durable brick and stone façade with ample windows for natural light. Interior finishes will prioritize durability and ease of maintenance.
- Since 2000, the population has surged by over 55%, making Nicholasville one of the state’s fastest-growing cities.
- With nearly 32,500 residents as of mid-2024, Nicholasville is the 10th-largest city in Kentucky.
Mayor Carter pointed out that the design took longer than anticipated due to the need to make modifications that would keep costs manageable. “We are grateful to Brandstetter Carroll Inc. for their patience and creativity as we sought to pack as much into this facility as feasible,” he said.
Construction is anticipated to begin in late fall, with completion expected in the summer of 2027, at an estimated cost of just under $17 million. The project will be funded through 20-year municipal bonds.
During construction, Nicholasville Utilities, Finance, and Human Resources will operate from temporary locations. The public will be updated through the City’s website, Facebook page, and routine correspondence.
