In the first episode of the City Notes interview series, Mayor Alex Carter offered an in-depth look at the growth, priorities, and community spirit shaping the City of Nicholasville. As one of Kentucky’s fastest-growing cities, Nicholasville is undergoing exciting transformations, with a clear focus on smart development, public safety, and quality of life.
“We’re doing a lot of great things to prepare for the needs of our residents,” said Mayor Carter. “Nicholasville is a safe, friendly, and growing city—and we’re proud to call it home.”
Rooted in Community, Focused on Progress
A lifelong resident and proud graduate of Jessamine County Public Schools and the University of Kentucky, Mayor Carter has deep roots in the community. His background in finance and public service informs his approach to leading a city of more than 32,000 residents. Despite rapid growth, Mayor Carter emphasized that Nicholasville has maintained its close-knit, neighborly atmosphere.
Why Nicholasville Is Growing
Nicholasville is currently the fifth fastest-growing city in the state. Mayor Carter credits that growth to strategic investments by both past and present city leaders, as well as to the city’s welcoming culture and livability. Investments in public safety, infrastructure, and parks are making the city even more attractive to families and businesses.
Investing in Public Safety
Since 2019, the city has increased starting salaries for police officers and firefighters by 58% to improve recruitment and retention. The new Nicholasville Police Department building, opened in 2022, is a state-of-the-art, 25,000-square-foot facility housing 72 sworn officers. Plans for a fifth fire station and a newly contracted $1.3 million fire engine are further steps to ensure safety keeps pace with growth.
A Community Recreation Center Years in the Making
One of the most anticipated projects is the upcoming Community Recreation Center. Located at John Preece Park, this 60,000-square-foot multi-use facility will include basketball and volleyball courts, a walking track, archery space, and community rooms. First envisioned more than 25 years ago, the project is finally underway and scheduled for completion in 2026.
Turning a Unique Donation into a Lasting Legacy
Nicholasville is also home to a turf field donated by the New Orleans Saints—a first for Kentucky. The city and county partnered to install the field, which was originally played on by NFL athletes. The new facility is already hosting events and sports programming.
Infrastructure That Matches Growth
To support the city’s expansion, Nicholasville completed a major upgrade to its wastewater treatment plant in 2024, effectively doubling capacity. This long-term investment ensures that infrastructure can meet the demands of future residential and commercial development.
Looking Ahead
Mayor Carter shared several priorities for the coming years:
- Construction of Fire Station #5 on the city’s west side
- Continued investment in public safety equipment and staffing
- Expanding recreation facilities and park amenities
- Supporting responsible, balanced growth that preserves the city’s small-town character
Celebrating Community
The city continues to embrace events that bring people together, such as the Fall Festival and the Nicholasville Performance Park concert series, which kicks off each May. These events strengthen community ties and celebrate the spirit of Nicholasville.
Nicholasville’s Identity
While its proximity to Lexington presents both opportunities and challenges, Mayor Carter believes Nicholasville’s unique charm lies in being close to urban amenities while retaining a sense of home. He hopes that more people continue to move to the city, raise their families here, and contribute to its bright future.
